Open to kids ages six to twelve (with a Playworker-in-Training program for ages 13-15), the camps focus on giving campers the freedom to build, explore, and invent within a unique “adventure playground.” Rather than structured schedules or themed activity blocks, each day emphasizes open-ended play—kids construct forts, create art, climb, dig, or organize their own games—supported by trained playworkers who ensure safety while allowing independence. Operating on a tiered tuition model that promotes financial accessibility, all proceeds help fund play:groundNYC’s free weekend programs at The Yard, connecting the camp’s mission of playful learning to its broader community-focused roots.

Kumon - Nationwide

"Kumon is a nationwide after-school program that focuses on math and reading for kids from roughly pre-K through high school. Instead of traditional “tutoring,” it uses a structured, worksheet-based system where each child starts at a personalized level (often below grade level at first), then works through small, carefully sequenced steps. Kids typically go to the center twice a week for short sessions (about 30–60 minutes per subject), and do daily worksheets at home in between. The idea is to build strong foundations, accuracy, and speed, while teaching kids to learn and problem-solve more independently. The program is designed to help kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in school by reinforcing core skills and gradually introducing more advanced concepts, basic arithmetic through algebra and geometry in math, and phonics through complex comprehension in reading. Kumon tends to work best for families who can commit to a consistent daily routine and for kids who can handle a bit of repetition and structure. It’s a good fit if you’re looking for a long-term, methodical approach to strengthening math and reading, rather than a short-term “homework help” solution."

YMCA - Nationwide

The YMCA sees camp as a "transformational experience”; time away from screens where kids can make friends, try new things, and be outdoors. Across the U.S., Ys run a wide variety of year round options, serving hundreds of thousands of kids each year. Day Camps A classic 9–3 or 9–4 style camp where kids go home each afternoon. Led by trained staff, kids enjoy outdoor games, swimming (at many locations), arts & crafts, STEM/creative projects, team-building, and character development activities. Day camps are a good fit for families who want a full camp experience and need local, reliable childcare in summer or school breaks. Overnight (Resident) Camps Sleepaway camp in “picturesque settings” across the country—woods, lakes, mountains. The sessions range from a weekend to several weeks. Campers engage with cabin life, campfires, lake/river activities, hiking, archery, ropes courses, arts, themed camp games, and leadership activities—depending on the site. This is a good choice for kids ready for more independence, deeper friendships, and bigger adventures away from home. Family Camps Camp for the whole family, not just kids! Usually for weekend or weeklong stays. Families stay in cabins or lodges and share activities together. Everyone can enjoy hiking, boating, games, campfires, crafts, and family-focused programs with other families on site. If your family is wanting a screen-light, outdoorsy vacation where no one has to plan the activities or cook every meal, this is your camp. Other Specialty Camps Other camps offered by the Y are built around a specific theme or need, such as: - Sports (basketball, soccer, multi-sport) - Teen outdoor adventure or travel - Music, arts, or cooking - STEM or coding - Camps designed for kids with medical, mental health, or other special needs so they can fully participate. These camps are good for kids who already know what they’re excited about or who need a more tailored environment (e.g., neurodivergent kids, kids with medical conditions). These can be day or overnight programs, depending on the location. All in all, if you’re looking for a reliable, structured, reasonably priced day or overnight camp grounded in social-emotional learning, outdoor play, and “old-school” camp traditions, YMCA camps are a strong, nationally established option to add to the list!

Mathnasium - Nationwide

"Mathnasium’s summer programs are designed to keep math skills from slipping over the summer (“summer slide”) and help kids get ahead for the coming school year. Their big promise: your child won’t just review worksheets, they’ll build real understanding and confidence using the Mathnasium Method, a structured, personalized approach to teaching math. Mathnasium serves K–12 students, and each center tailors its summer offerings a bit differently, but the general model is the same across locations. Every child starts with a diagnostic assessment that identifies strengths, gaps, and the specific concepts they need most. Based on that assessment, the center creates a personalized learning plan, whether your child needs to catch up, keep up, or move ahead. Students attend regular sessions (often 2–3 times per week), either in person at a learning center or online, working in a small-ratio setting with trained instructors using Mathnasium’s proprietary curriculum. These summer sessions mix direct instruction, guided practice, and math games/activities, so it doesn’t feel like endless worksheets. Centers often emphasize that kids have fun while building deep understanding.
