About This Activity

Kumon is a nationwide after-school program that focuses on math and reading for kids from roughly pre-K through high school. Instead of traditional “tutoring,” it uses a structured, worksheet-based system where each child starts at a personalized level (often below grade level at first), then works through small, carefully sequenced steps. Kids typically go to the center twice a week for short sessions (about 30–60 minutes per subject), and do daily worksheets at home in between. The idea is to build strong foundations, accuracy, and speed, while teaching kids to learn and problem-solve more independently.

The program is designed to help kids catch up, keep up, or get ahead in school by reinforcing core skills and gradually introducing more advanced concepts, basic arithmetic through algebra and geometry in math, and phonics through complex comprehension in reading. Kumon tends to work best for families who can commit to a consistent daily routine and for kids who can handle a bit of repetition and structure.

It’s a good fit if you’re looking for a long-term, methodical approach to strengthening math and reading, rather than a short-term “homework help” solution.
