Manhattan Youth

NYC

About This Activity

Manhattan Youth runs a variety of youth programs, including a full-day summer camp program known as Downtown Day Camp for children from elementary through early middle school ages (typically K-8th grade). It combines a wide mix of activities including daily swim lessons in their private pool, organized field sports on Battery Park City’s ball fields, access to the beach volleyball and mini-golf at Pier 25, arts and crafts, “ooey-gooey” science projects, music and drumming, LEGO/robotics builds, movement & dance, and weekly trips/special events.

They also operate school-holiday camps and have programs for younger and older age divisions (Juniors ~4-8 years, Seniors ~9-13 years) with age-appropriate activities, choice periods, and more advanced options like digital media labs and excursions. Camp philosophy emphasizes social, emotional and physical development in a fun, safe and community-focused setting.

Manhattan Youth additionally provides flexible after-school programming. Participants engage daily in a mix of homework help, project-based enrichment tasks, sports and movement, and arts and enrichment activities. The programs are custom-fit (1–5 days per week) and also operate extended hours on half-days and during school vacations.

Ratings & Reviews

What Parents Like

  • Manhattan Youth is deeply woven into Lower Manhattan: they run after-school programs in multiple public schools and operate Downtown Day Camp from their own Downtown Community Center. For many families, that makes it feel like a one-stop, trusted hub for both school-year and summer coverage. (1)
  • The Downtown Community Center includes a warm pool, studios, and child-friendly rooms. For camp and after-school, that means kids aren’t just in a borrowed gym—they have spaces designed for swim, art, dance, STEM, and more, all under one roof.  (1, 2)
  • Manhattan Youth’s day camp and after-school model both emphasize rotation: swim, sports, art, games, sometimes science/tech and special events. Parents who want their kid to try a bit of everything (without juggling multiple separate programs) will likely see this as a big plus. (3, 4)
  • At school-based programs, kids go straight from class into Manhattan Youth after-school, then stay until early evening. At the Downtown Community Center, after-school also runs through the end of the workday. For many parents, the appeal is "I don’t need to patchwork care; one organization handles the '3 p.m.–6 p.m.' problem." (1)

What Parents Think Could be Improved

  • Simply by nature, big city programs serving lots of kids are often lively, busy, and noisy. Many families love the energy; some kids (especially sensitive, younger, or easily overwhelmed kids) may find it a lot. (2)
  • Even if a camp markets itself as having a “country day camp” feel, the programs still operate in a very urban environment: indoor spaces, ballfields, local parks, piers. That’s terrific for convenience and resources, but parents looking for forest hikes and rustic cabins might need to temper expectations or pair it with a more nature-focused week elsewhere. (1)

Our Take

If you’re a downtown NYC family considering Manhattan Youth’s Downtown Day Camp or after-school programs, you can rely on the fact that it's a central, well-equipped community space with a pool and multiple activity rooms and a wide variety of activities (swim, sports, arts, games, clubs) under one roof. They also have a longstanding presence in neighborhood schools and summer life, which brings a reputation.

The experience will hinge on whether your child thrives in a busy, multi-activity setting high-energy environment with lots of kids and moving parts and how that schedule meshes with your daily reality (commute, work hours, preferences).
