About This Activity
The 14th Street Y offers a mix of summer camp options designed for downtown NYC families who want a blend of community, creativity, and (as much as possible) time outside without leaving the city completely behind. The Y’s camp “ecosystem” includes a classic outdoor day camp, a more urban/indoor-based option, and programming for younger children and tweens.
One of the flagship options is the New Country Day Camp, an outdoor day camp that buses kids out of the city to a larger, greener space for classic camp activities: swimming, sports, nature exploration, art, music, and group games. It’s geared toward elementary and middle schoolers (grades K-8) and is ideal if you want your city kid to spend long days running around outside, coming home tired, dirty, and happy.
Closer to home, the 14th Street Y also offers the New Town Day Camp, a downtown day camp for younger kids (2-5), based in and around the East Village facility. That program leans more into a mix of indoor and neighborhood adventures (gym time, rooftop or playground time, arts & crafts, drama, dance, and local outings) designed for families who prefer a shorter commute and familiar setting.
Additionally, their Pride Camp for grades K - 6 and Summer Club for littles, ages 1-3, ensure that all age groups and interests are covered!
Across all of their camps, the throughline is a values-driven, inclusive environment with small-group attention and a strong community feel. Families can often choose full-summer enrollment or specific sessions, to work with your schedule.

Ratings & Reviews
What Parents Like
- Many parents highlight that the 14th Street Y feels like a true neighborhood hub. Staff know kids by name, older and younger siblings can often attend related programs, and families bump into each other in the lobby or playground. It’s described as especially nice for downtown families who want their kids to feel part of a community, not just dropped at a big, anonymous camp. (1, 2)
- A frequent theme is appreciation for counselors who are engaged, patient, and genuinely fun, especially with younger campers who are new to full-day programs. Parents mention staff who help shy kids warm up, manage transitions well, and keep activities feeling playful rather than rigid. (1, 3, 4)
- Families like that their kids get a balanced day: art, music, drama, sports/gym time, swimming (or water play), and outdoor periods, plus theme days and special events. For the “country-style” out-of-city day camp, parents say their kids come home tired and happy from a full day of swimming, hiking, and outdoor games; for the in-city programs, the arts, theater, and neighborhood adventures get lots of love. (1)
- Parents repeatedly mention the location and hours as big wins: being able to drop off in the East Village, use bus service to the outdoor camp, and access early/late care options makes it practical during a workday. Some also note that registration by session rather than full summer gives flexibility. (1, 2)
What Parents Think Could be Improved
- A recurring caution is that 14th Street Y camps are not the cheapest option in the city. Families who love the program often feel the community feel, staff quality, and programming justify the cost; others wish there were more robust sliding scale/scholarship options or note that multiple weeks add up quickly. Our Take
14th Street Y summer camps come across as a strong option for downtown NYC families who want a community-centered, values-driven camp experience, rich mix of arts, swim, play, and outdoor time, caring counselors and a welcoming, inclusive vibe, and logistics that actually work with a Manhattan workday.
The trade-offs parents mention most are cost (compared to city-run programs), “very urban” facility constraints for the in-building programs, and the usual NYC stress around registration and communication. For families who prioritize community, arts, and convenience, and who don’t mind paying a bit more than bare-bones rec options, the 14th Street Y is often described as a beloved, “we came back again this year” camp choice.
