About This Activity

Piper Theatre Productions’ Youth Theatre programs are built around an ensemble-based, process-driven, physical theatre approach—think collaboration, movement, storytelling, and a strong community vibe for young artists. Their after-school theatre programs run in seasonal sessions (hosted at Old Stone House in Park Slope). For Winter 2026, they hosted a Playwrights Playground for ages 10–13 (Thursdays, Jan 8–Feb 12, 3:30–5:30pm), where students draft original short plays (laptops required) and end with a staged reading. For Spring 2026, they'll be hosting a 10-week afterschool performance class for ages 10–12 (Thursdays Mar 19–Jun 11, 3:30–5:30pm) built around a specific comedic/physical theatre piece (“No Running Unless Being Chased”).

For summer, Piper’s Summer Youth Program (in July) is more intensive and performance-forward, with multiple tracks by age and interest. Younger kids can start with Piper Starlings Sing (ages 7–9)—a two-week program where week one is creative play/process drama in the world of Oz and week two adds choreography/songs, culminating in a live performance as “Munchkins.” Ages 10–12 have Act One: Musical Introduction (also two weeks) performing The Wizard of Oz, designed as a welcoming first musical theatre experience. There are also workshop-style options like Introduction to Shakespeare: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (ages 10–12) culminating in a short play.

Older/more serious tracks include Piper Theatre Workshop: Adventure Series (ages 11–15) focused on building an original, physical, prop-driven ensemble adventure with stage combat and intense scene work, plus Act Two: Musical Intensives (ages 12–17) where students audition and are placed into one of two productions (The Prom: School Edition or Alice By Heart) for a rigorous rehearsal process and end performances. Parent logistics to know: summer rehearsals are listed as 9am–4pm (in Park Slope), students are expected to attend every rehearsal and performance.

Ratings & Reviews

What Parents Like

  • In Park Slope Parents reviews, families repeatedly say their kids loved it, asked to return year after year, and that it’s the only day camp some kids consistently request again. (1)
  • High-quality teaching + real growth (even with Shakespeare). Parents describe kids engaging thoughtfully with Shakespearean language, learning a lot, and feeling proud of what they create and perform. (1)
  • Several PSP reviewers call out the “incredible…staff, organization, communication, heart, community,” plus a supportive, ensemble-style culture where kids work hard but feel backed by peers and adults. (1)
  • Great for both serious theatre kids and total newbies. One review notes a theatre-loving child thrived and a best friend with “zero experience” also loved it—because of teamwork and mutual support baked into the program. (1)
  • Reviews emphasize end-of-session shows as a highlight (original scripts, “meaty dialogue,” kids proud of the outcome). (1)
  • Student perspective echoes the intensity + payoff. CampRatingz reviews include a camper saying the staff is amazing, the program helped them become a better actor/singer, and the environment feels like “no joke” training (in a good way). (2)

What Parents Think Could Be Improved

  • It can be intense (more “real theatre program” than “fluffy camp”). Camper feedback explicitly describes it as serious and geared toward kids who want a more professional-style experience. (2)

Our Take

Piper’s summer (and after-school) programming reads like a high-trust, community-driven theatre camp that’s especially strong for kids who love storytelling, ensemble work, and a meaningful final performance—while still being welcoming to beginners. The MomBrains move before booking is to confirm a few specifics for your child: how much independence kids have during lunch/breaks, how groups are structured by age/experience, and what support looks like for shy/anxious kids—because parents love the program most when the intensity and independence level match their kid.
