About This Activity
RSM runs structured summer math camps for grades K–12 designed to either shore up fundamentals, prep for the next school year, or stretch kids who want more challenge. Classes follow the same core format as their normal tutoring programs, with a 6-week summer session and 2 classes per week.
Small classes (up to ~12 students) with an expert teacher leading an interactive lesson in a classroom setting (in person or online, depending on branch). Their curriculum is based on the “Russian math” approach: lots of logic, problem solving, and conceptual understanding, adapted to U.S. standards.
A great way to avoid the summer slump!

Ratings & Reviews
What Parents Like
- Many parents choose RSM because it goes well beyond school math, introducing algebra and deeper problem-solving earlier than public schools. (1, 2, 3)
- Across multiple reviews, parents report kids becoming strong, independent problem-solvers, moving into advanced tracks, and doing well on standardized tests or math competitions. National Math Kangaroo results show RSM Battery Park students appearing among top national scorers, which aligns with parents saying RSM “gave [their kids] a tremendous advantage in math.” (3, 4)
- Parents who like RSM tend to appreciate the step-by-step, cumulative curriculum, less random homework, more “this all builds toward something.” They see value in the regular homework, in-depth classwork, and emphasis on reasoning over quick tricks. (2, 3)
- Parents of kids who already enjoy math (or who are clearly above grade level) report that RSM gives them the challenge and depth they can’t get at school. Reviews often describe RSM as particularly suited for advanced students and competition-minded families. (5, 3)
What Parents Think Could be Improved
- One of the most common complaints: too much homework, on top of school and other activities. Parents say kids can feel overwhelmed, burned out, or resentful, even when the math gains are real. Some describe the experience as “high level, high pressure + lots of homework.” (3)
- RSM is described as expensive and not very flexible, non-refundable fees, commitments for a full year or term, and limited refunds are recurring themes. For NYC in particular, yearly costs are often quoted in the low-to-mid thousands of dollars per child. (3)
Our Take
RSM Battery Park is likely to feel like a serious, high-rigor math track, not a casual enrichment class. Families who love it tend to be those looking for deep challenge, competition-level skills, and a structured curriculum that pushes kids well beyond school. They report strong gains and a clear academic payoff.
On the flip side, many parents across RSM locations warn about the heavy homework load, fast pace, and rigid policies. For kids who are already stretched thin, anxious, or who need a more flexible, adaptive teaching style, the same intensity that helps some students thrive can be too much.
