Brookline Youth Hockey

Brookline Youth Hockey is a community-based youth hockey organization serving families in Brookline and surrounding Boston communities, with programs designed to accommodate both beginners and more experienced players. For children new to hockey, the organization offers a Learn-to-Play program for ages roughly 5–10, including a partnership with the Boston Bruins' Learn-to-Play program that provides new players with equipment and introductory instruction. BYH's own Learn-to-Play program combines sessions at Jack Kirrane Rink and Warrior Ice Arena and is intended to prepare most players to transition into travel hockey after a season.

For more experienced players, BYH offers co-ed travel teams from Mites through Bantams, plus girls' teams from U8 through U18. Travel hockey runs primarily September through March and combines team practices, professional skills sessions and weekend games; BYH also provides goalie training at no additional cost. The current 10U–14U program plays in the Valley Hockey League, with approximately 35 games during the season and most games within a 20–45 minute drive of Brookline.

For parents, the appeal is the combination of a local, community-oriented program and a fairly substantial competitive pathway. BYH says it encourages players to remain multi-sport athletes while making hockey their primary focus during the winter, which may make it a good middle ground for families who want competitive hockey without necessarily pursuing an elite, hockey-only lifestyle.
