Downtown Dance Factory

NYC

About This Activity

The Downtown Dance Factory offers a summer camp that runs for 8 weeks and offers sessions for kids in preschool through middle school (K–8 grades). Campers receive instruction in a wide variety of dance styles, including jazz, hip hop, tap, lyrical, breakdancing, theater dance, and choreography, with no prior experience required.

There’s also a Preschool Program for ages 3–5, which features creative movement, jazz, tap and hip hop mixed with crafts, storytelling and dress-up.

Activities culminate in a Friday mini-showcase for full-day dancers where they demonstrate what they learned during the week.

Ratings & Reviews

What Parents Like

  • Parents consistently say their kids love DDF summer camp weeks, especially younger dancers. The vibe is described as joyful, upbeat, and creative, with lots of movement, games, and age-appropriate choreography rather than rigid technique drills all day. (1, 2)
  • A big theme is how kind, patient, and energetic the staff are. Parents appreciate that teachers help shy kids warm up, include new campers quickly, and keep the atmosphere positive and encouraging. Many kids ask to go back for additional weeks because they adore the teachers. (1, 3)
  • Families love the weekly themes (Broadway, pop, princess/character, hip-hop, etc.) and the chance to watch a short performance at the end of the week. Parents say it gives kids something to work toward and makes them proud to show what they’ve learned. (1, 4)
  • Reviews often mention that the facilities are clean, modern, and well-organized, with smooth drop-off/pickup, clear routines, and a professional feel. For downtown families, the Tribeca location and easy elevator access are a big logistical plus. (1, 2, 3)

What Parents Think Could be Improved

  • Because the camp is active and music-heavy, some parents mention it can be loud and high-energy, which might be a lot for more sensitive kids. A few note that very introverted or easily overwhelmed children may need a gentler ramp-up or shorter days at first. (1)

Our Take

Overall, parent sentiment around Downtown Dance Factory’s summer camps is strongly positive: families describe them as happy, well-run, and truly fun dance experiences where kids come home tired, smiling, and full of new routines to show off. The biggest wins are the enthusiastic teachers, creative themes, and end-of-week performances that build confidence.

The main trade-offs parents mention are potential cost, the naturally high energy/noise level, and the need to plan early because popular sessions sell out. For downtown NYC families with kids who love music, movement, and performance, DDF camps often get labeled a favorite summer choice.
