About This Activity
NYPAA’s summer programming is a two-week, conservatory-style performing arts intensive in New York City designed for teens/older students who want a serious, all-in training block—not a casual “do-a-little-of-everything” camp. The program blends multiple disciplines—acting, musical theatre, dance, voice, stage combat, and “stage to studio” work—taught by industry professionals, and it’s positioned as both skill-building and career exposure (the camp highlights one-on-one coaching/career planning and opportunities to connect with agents/managers).
For parents, the experience is also very “NYC summer adventure” in addition to studio time: the program includes city experiences like a Broadway show, a Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise, exploring iconic landmarks (they reference places like Times Square), and wrapping with a farewell dinner. A standout feature is the professional recording session element (they describe recording vocals for an animated or Broadway-style number / recording an opening number), which makes it feel more “real world” than a typical camp week.
It's worth noting that no audition is required and scholarships are not available.

Ratings & Reviews
What Parents Like
- NYPAA promotes confidence + “real skills” gains. A Time Out listing says former students report the classes are worth the time and money because they learn skills that translate to auditions and performance—plus many mention increased confidence and a deeper appreciation for the performing arts. (1)
- On CourseHorse, the school holds a 4.4/5 rating, and written feedback commonly describes classes as welcoming and instructors as helpful/supportive. While these reviews are for classes (not strictly the summer intensive), they’re still a useful signal on instruction quality and culture. (2)
- The summer program itself is positioned as a focused, conservatory-style two-week experience with multiple disciplines and industry exposure—an appealing draw for families looking for something more intensive than a typical day camp. (2, 3)
What Parents Think Could Be Improved
- Most online feedback is not from parents reviewing the summer program directly; it’s more often former students, adult class participants, or general listings, so that's something for parents to keep in mind. - In Reddit discussions, commenters question how The New York Performing Arts Academy compares to degree-granting conservatories and flag that it may not operate like a traditional accredited program (and raise practical concerns like visas in one thread). These aren’t parent reviews, but they’re common “due diligence” points families may want to consider. (4, 4.5)
Our Take
NYPAA’s online reputation is strong for “training experience + confidence gains.” If you’re considering the summer program, the best MomBrains-style approach is to treat it like a serious teen intensive and do a quick fit-check before booking. That way you’re buying the right type of experience—not just the NYC sparkle.
