play:groundNYC offers adventure-style summer day camps as well as mini school year camps (and one-day sessions for littlest kids) on Governors Island, designed around the idea that children learn best through self-directed play. Open to kids ages six to twelve (with a Playworker-in-Training program for ages 13-15), the camps focus on giving campers the freedom to build, explore, and invent within a unique “adventure playground.” Rather than structured schedules or themed activity blocks, each day emphasizes open-ended play—kids construct forts, create art, climb, dig, or organize their own games—supported by trained playworkers who ensure safety while allowing independence.
Operating on a tiered tuition model that promotes financial accessibility, all proceeds help fund play:groundNYC’s free weekend programs at The Yard, connecting the camp’s mission of playful learning to its broader community-focused roots.
