About This Activity

Tenacity is a Boston youth-development organization that uses tennis, fitness, literacy and mentoring to support academic and personal growth. Its school-year pathway begins with Baseline Basics, which introduces 4th- and 5th-graders at select Boston Public Schools to tennis and the Tenacity program. The core Ace Academy serves students in grades 6–8 and combines tennis and fitness with academic enrichment, social-emotional support, life-skills development and family engagement. Tennis is taught through a games-based approach, and the program includes competitive play and leagues as part of its athletic component.

For families, Tenacity is less of a traditional standalone sports league and more of a long-term youth-development program built around tennis. Its summer Tennis & Reading Program is particularly accessible: it is free for Boston youth ages 6–15, runs on weekdays during July and August, and combines tennis, fitness and reading at sites throughout the city. Students who complete Ace Academy can continue into College & Career Prep, receiving tutoring, mentoring, financial-literacy support, college and career advising, and additional tennis opportunities. Parents should note that the school-year programs are connected to specific BPS partner schools, while the summer program is open more broadly to eligible Boston families.

Ratings & Reviews

What Parents Like

  • Parents consistently mention that their children have fun, stay active and look forward to attending. One parent described the Summer Tennis & Reading Program as an experience where their child became more social, started initiating games with other kids and was exceptionally enthusiastic about going. (1)
  • Parents of Ace Academy students specifically praise staff for building meaningful relationships with kids and supporting them through academic and personal transitions. One parent said the program helped their daughter make a positive transition into middle school, while another described the three-year experience as “amazing.” (2)
  • Families seem to appreciate that Tenacity combines tennis with academics, fitness, social-emotional development and mentoring. The summer program also incorporates reading, which parents can see as a nice alternative to a traditional sports-only camp. (2)
  • The Summer Tennis & Reading Program is free for eligible Boston youth ages 6–15, operates at numerous neighborhood sites and is designed to keep kids active and engaged during the summer. That accessibility is a major plus for families.

What Parents Think Could be Improved

  • Tenacity's mission is broader youth development, so families looking for intensive private coaching or a competitive tennis pathway may want to supplement the program elsewhere.
  • It's worth noting that Tenacity has limited public reviews outside of their own website.

Our Take

Tenacity looks like a particularly compelling option for Boston families who want sports to be a vehicle for broader development. The parent feedback highlights kids having fun, forming relationships with staff and peers, becoming more confident and benefiting academically and socially. The free Summer Tennis & Reading Program is especially attractive for families looking for an accessible summer option. The main caveat is that there isn't enough independent parent-review data to make strong claims about consistency across every site, so we'd treat Tenacity's published testimonials as encouraging but not equivalent to a broad set of third-party reviews.
